High Intensity Weight Training

Until a couple of years ago I was never a big fan of exercising, especially cardiovascular exercise. My current opinion based on doing high intensity weight training for the past 3-4 years (also called H.I.T. or high intensity training), is that cardio isn't necessary for optimal health. I came across high intensity training a few years ago when I read "Body By Science". Body By Science is a wonderfully written book by Dr. Doug Mcguff and John Little.
High Intensity training has its beginnings when Nautilus was founded and invented by Arthur Jones. Arthur Jones worked with bodybuilders such as Mike and Ray Mentzer which were able to get much better results with less time but with the intensity ramped up considerably. Since then it has been improved upon by people such as Drew Baye (a former bodybuilder and now personal trainer), Dr. Doug Mcguff and John Little.
High intensity training can be done with body weight exercises, machines or free weights. It is always preferable to use machines when possible as they are more safer and efficient (and more effective) than body weight exercises or free weights. If possible I would advise using or buying an Arx Fit Omni (which are spendy), but the next best option are nautilus machines.
Med ex and Hammer strength are also good options as they have been developed by Arthur Jones or relatives of his. Arthur Jones spent years testing and engineering Nautilus machines to provide resistance throughout the entire motion of the exercise. Modern nautilus machines aren't always as good as older models but they are still far superior than other machine brands and body weight exercises.
High intensity training is typically done by using simple compound muscle exercises with one or two isolation exercises mixed in as well. I still currently do the big five routine which is detailed in "Body by Science" and uses five simple compound weight training exercises. I then add an isolation exercises after doing the five compound weight training exercises. All exercises should be done slowly taking, with each repetiton taking 6-10 seconds. The weight of the exercise should be about 80-90 percent of your maximum possible weight you can use for that exercise. The total amount of reps should be about 10 or if you are measuring with a stopwatch should take about one minute. Exercises are done until positive failure and at the point you can't push it anymore, then hold for at least ten seconds and slowly release.
Breathing is an important part of doing High Intensity weight training, taking deep slow breaths at first and then when getting close to the point of positive failure breathing in and out quickly to assist (and don't hold your breath!). Holding your breath is best avoided as it doesn't help you finish the repetition or exercise your muscles to their fullest ability. Staying calm and not getting angry (which is used a lot in conventional weight training) is important while performing high intensity weight training as well. Being stoic and calm is the best state of mind while performing high intensity weight training exercises to get the most out of them.

Tai Chi
Tai chi is a slow-moving, meditative martial art first developed in the 1300's. Researchers at the Tufts University School of Medicine conducted a randomized control trial to compare the effects of 2 1-hour session of tai chi per week to those of wellness education and stretching on patients with fibromyalgia. The most striking outcome concerned scores on the Fibromyalgia Impact Questionnaire (FIQ), which range from 1-100, 100 being the worst or most severe. Participants in the tai chi group had a mean score of 62.9 at baseline and 35.1 after the 12-week intervention period compared to respective scores of 68 and 58.6 among the control group. Qi Gong
Qi gong is another slow movement therapy, but with less emphasis on defensive motions and more on meditation. A study of 100 fibromyalgia patients assessed the impacts of a 3 ½ day qi gong training session followed by 8 weeks of home practice for 3-5 hours a week. The study compared outcomes for both immediate intervention and intervention delayed 6 months. The immediate intervention group saw improvements over the delayed group while the latter pursued usual care and awaited treatment, speaking to the effectiveness of qi gong over usual care. The former group saw a mean difference of 18.45 points on the FIQ; once the delayed group received qi gong intervention, their average score dropped by 17.97 points. For both groups, the primary outcome of pain reduction based on an 11-point scale dropped by an average of less than 2 points, a slightly significant result. The study found that the best results were found in those who practiced for 5 or more hours a week; those who practiced for 3 or less saw only slight positive results. These two studies suggest that tai chi yields more positive results for less time investment. This may be true, but we must keep in mind the small study populations involved and a lack of much corresponding research to bolster their results. This tells you that the muscles are growing and that you're getting the right kind of training. It is widely accepted that weight-bearing exercise helps to slow bone loss and may even in some cases be able to reverse it, which is why "cardio" exercise such as walking and running (in moderation) can be very beneficial. Adopt the standard press up position - Lie with the body raised off the floor, hands slightly wider than shoulder-width apart, arms extended and body straight.
  • Keeping the body straight, bend the elbows and lower the shoulders and hips towards the floor - only go as low as you can to be sure that you are going to be able to do five repetitions. If that means that you only flex the elbows one inch, great! Do five "1-inch press-ups" every time you get the chance.

  • With this approach, you will find that you quickly progress to making the final press up two inches, then three, then four and so on until you can do five full press ups. After that, keep adding repetitions until you can do twenty. You will be surprised how quickly you will progress with just a little bit of effort.
A few words on correct form:
  • Before starting the exercises, "activate the core" by lifting the chest, drawing in the stomach slightly and tightening the muscles of the butt (the "glutes").
  • When the arms are in the fully extended position, the shoulder blades should be "open". As you lower the body towards the ground, you should feel the shoulder blades move together.
  • Hold the head level. Fix the gaze slightly forward and actively engage the neck muscles to keep the head from dropping.
  • Breathe in on the way down and out on the way up.

5 Quick Toning Exercise For Busy People

We all know that getting exercise and staying fit is important. We know that it is important for a longer and overall healthier life. However, many of us have such a busy life that it can be hard to make time for exercise. Read on for five exercises that you can do to tone your body and can be done in a limited amount of time.
1. Squats are a great exercise. They work your backside, your quads and your hamstrings. To do them correctly you want to stay with your feet shoulder length apart. While you are keeping your upper body straight, push your bottom back like you are going to sit down in a chair. When you reach the level of where the chair would be - stop and hold that position for a count of 5 and then raise back up.
2. Bridge lifts are super to tone your bottom. Lay on the floor with your knees bent and your feet flat on the floor - about shoulder width apart. With your hand on both sides of your body, push your body up with your feet while squeezing your gluteus muscles and lifting your bottom off the floor. Hold this for a count of 5 and then lower yourself to the floor.
3. Push ups are something that seems to put fear in everyone - but are a great exercise for toning your arms and chest muscles. Keep your back straight as you raise and lower your body. If you are not strong enough in the beginning to lift your whole body from your toes - it's perfectly fine to lower yourself to your knees instead.
4. Crunches are another super exercise for toning your body. This is the way that I like to do them. Lie on the floor with your legs resting up on a chair or couch with your fingers behind your head. Lift your upper body toward your knees while squeezing your abs. Hold for 5 counts and then lower yourself back to the floor.
5. Reverse lunges are a great leg muscle toning exercise. While you are standing with your feet together, move one leg back until you are in a lunge. Your front leg should be at 90 degrees and your back leg extended. Lower yourself until your knee almost touches the floor. Hold for a count of two.
